Summer Wedding

Friends, sun, sand, and sea, that sounds like a summer to me.” Unknown

Congratulations you’ve selected the most popular wedding season, Summer (June – August). Personally, my summer is not complete if I haven’t attended a beautiful summer wedding. Everyone knows that summer is generally when the weather is the best, beautiful flowers are in full bloom, there are many holidays and celebratory occasions. It’s no secret that summer weddings are very popular. What might not be so obvious however is that summer weddings require lots of preparation, lead time, early/quick decisions, and vendor/venue confirmation. The earlier you prepare, the lower the potential for conflicts with other couples.

Below are top five pointers that can help your planning:

1. The summer is bountiful with many flower choices. Below is a list of some typical Summer wedding flowers to consider for your big day

  • Cali Lilies
  • Carnation
  • Chamomile

  • Cosmo
  • Daffodils
  • Dahlia
  • Delphinium
  • Dianthus

  • Pink
  • Peach
  • Green
  • Purple
  • Floral blend

4. In the Summer, smaller portions or finger foods tend to be a good choice which allows for creative expression of your favorite foods. Below are some food & drink options to consider.

  • Food theme stations with popular finger foods (i.e. sandwiches, chicken, pizza, etc…)
  • Food assembly station (i.e. salad bars, taco stations, cheese/meat assortment, carving station, creative custom creations, etc…)
  • Cold appetizers
  • Buffets
  • Fruit and veggie display
  • Summer drink specialties such as iced tea, lemonade, seasonal fruits, floral, colorful, etc.
    • Be sure to have many drink options for guests to combat the summer heat
    • You can also consider a blender bar to make frozen drinks
  • BBQ varieties
  • Dessert assortment table (My personal favorite)
    • Be creative. Consider including summer treat favorites such as popsicles, various ice cream and sorbets, smoothies, parfaits, s’mores, or shortcakes

5. As Murphy’s law has taught us, anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Here are a few for things you might want to consider to be prepared in case things don’t go exactly to plan:

  • Weather –
  • Be sure to have a plan B to account for the change in weather conditions (i.e. wind, rain, sunshine, etc…)
  • Consider having provisions for your guests to help with weather conditions (i.e. rain, heat, bugs, allergies, etc…)
  • If you are planning to store or serve food/wedding cake outdoors be mindful of heat conditions
  • Be sure to discuss equipment protection with vendors for weather conditions incidents – such as stages, music or photo equipment to prevent a surprise liability cost.
  • Be sure that you and your guests stay hydrated in the heat
  • Allow extra time to retouch makeup or freshening up for post ceremony activities or photos.
    • You may want to consider an outfit change
  • Be aware of sun position/high visibility at venue or photo op locations
  • Wedding crashers & photo bombers – If you are outdoors in an open area, you may get onlookers around your festivities. Find a way to isolate your area and ensure privacy that you desire for the event, photos and guest comfort.
  • Holiday weekend weddings – It might be helpful to have a resource or two available if you are planning a wedding during the holiday weekend since this is a busy time.
    • Some guests might get frustrated or confused more easily, so consider having a designated travel agent or hotel representative to work with guests.
    •  You can also consider delegating this to very responsible/knowledgeable wedding party member.

I hope these tips are useful for your upcoming wedding. Enjoy the planning process and don’t let the stress keep you from appreciating the special moments leading up to your special day.
